Testimonials
Dear Friends,
Cancer is the leading cause of death by illness among children in the United States. For more than 25 years, Children’s Cancer Research Fund® has been focused on one thing — bringing an end to childhood cancer.
The funds we provide enable the University of Minnesota Cancer Center, a leading pediatric cancer research facility, to continue its pioneering efforts in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of childhood cancers. By providing more than $100,000 in support this past year, the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund has helped us move closer to a cure by funding cutting-edge research in the areas of Immune-Based Therapies, Umbilical Cord Blood Transplants, and Phase I Experimental Therapeutics. These programs represent areas of global leadership in pediatric oncology.
Truly, your support of the Randy Shaver Celebrity Golf Classic makes an enormous difference to children fighting cancer here in Minnesota, and around the world.
Thank you.

Dear Friends,
When evaluating a charitable organization, in my opinion the most important factor is their level of stewardship of the donations - making sure the donations make it into the hands of deserving recipients. The Randy Shaver foundation is exemplary in this regard, with low administrative overhead, an ethical and energetic leadership, and careful scrutiny of potential recipients of their foundation grants.
Thank you.

Dear Friends,
Parents of children newly diagnosed with cancer are overwhelmed with information at an emotionally vulnerable time. Part of the information they hear is about the "cognitive late effects" of cancer--the learning problems that can occur months or even years after completion of treatment. It is difficult for parents to take in all of this information at diagnosis, but they need to know and to really understand it in order to be effective advocates for their children's futures.
The grant money I received from the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund is allowing me to educate parents about learning problems after cancer in a novel way. This July, we will hold our first Oncology Family Retreat at the Koinonia Retreat Center on Lake Sylvia. Parents will participate in educational seminars to learn about the learning problems that can occur after cancer treatments, strategies that work, and how to be effective advocates. Afternoons will be free for families to enjoy the retreat center together. We appreciate that the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund has generously provided this opportunities for oncology families from both Children's Hospitals and Clinics and the University of Minnesota Cancer Center.

Dear Friends,
Although cancer therapy for children has improved dramatically over the past 20 years, children still experience a number of side effects such as pain, nausea, fatigue and insomnia. These symptoms make the treatment course more traumatic and may limit the amount of chemotherapy or radiation that a child receives. Complementary and alternative therapies offer many options to assist with symptom reduction that are gentle and supportive to the child and family undergoing cancer treatment.
Many cancer centers, both adult and pediatric, are offering these services, but there has been little study of which options are most suited to children and most useful for treating specific symptoms. This grant from the Randy Shaver Foundation will allow us to conduct a study entitled Complementary and Alternative Services for Symptom Management in Children with Cancer. The purpose of the study will be to better understand which options are most desirable to families and which therapies are most useful for symptom reduction.
